A splitting axe is not a thin felling axe. The head is wider and heavier behind the edge so it wedges the round apart instead of cutting into it, which is why the same weight splits differently.
Specify the handle length against the round diameter you expect: short handles for kindling on a block, long handles for full rounds on the ground. Fibreglass handles are the usual export choice because they tolerate missed strikes.
